Toucan adaptations

Toucans are exclusively forest inhabitants. Favorite places of these handsome people are forests and woodlands of Brazil, Argentina up to the south of North America. Forests prefer plain, less often mountain, but at an altitude of more than 3000 meters they are no longer met.

There is only one species of toucans, which can be found at an altitude of over 3000 meters. They live in hollows left by other birds or expel other smaller residents. There are not very many enemies in nature for these birds, only a few species of snakes are a danger to them, usually they are pythons, and also cat and large predatory birds.

The local population often hunts these cute birds because of their delicious meat, and from the plumage make jewelry for themselves and tourists. The way of life of toucans makes them easy prey. Many of them become victims of illegal hunters. This must be remembered when you want to purchase it at a pet store.

It is believed that these lovely creatures are omnivorous. But all the same, the birds eat toucans mainly with plant food, this is their main diet. Usually it is berries and fruits. Less often they can catch an insect or a small lizard, but this is extremely rare. Even rarer can ruin someone else’s nest and eat egg-laying. However, this behavior is not typical for these birds. In captivity, birds eagerly eat bananas, rice porridge and even dog food, previously soaked in water. Very fond of persimmons, plums and apricots.
