Raccoon is a small mammal that inhabits the American open spaces. Only one acclimatized species lives in Eurasia – the raccoon strip.

There are four types of raccoons: the most common raccoon-poloscun, raccoon-rakoeid, Cozumel and Guadeloupe. The largest animal is the raccoon strip, its body length is 45-65 cm, the tail reaches 20-25 cm, they weigh from 5 to 9 kg. Distinguish species by their color, length of wool, size and weight.

Raccoons lead a single way of life. They live in mixed forests near water bodies or swampy terrain. They live mostly in hollows of trees or occupy other people’s abandoned burrows, since they can not dig themselves. The raccoons also adapted to life near a person, settling in gardens, fields and on the outskirts of cities. On the hunt the animals come out at night, in the afternoon they prefer to sit in the den. In search of food, the raccoon comes out at dusk and searches for its prey in a radius of up to 1.5 km.
