Who invented basketball

Basketball is one of the most popular sports games in the world. Players of the National Basketball Association of the United States are literally world stars. At the same time, a little more than a hundred and twenty years have passed since the invention of basketball.

How basketball was invented

The invention of the predecessor of modern basketball contributed to the cold winter of 1891 in the US state of Massachusetts. Students of the Springfield College of the Youth Christian Association were forced to engage in physical education in the gym.

At that time, the only kind of sports activities in the room was gymnastics, which pretty quickly bored young people. Wanting to stir up their wards, the teacher of physical education and anatomy James Naismith came up with a ball game suitable for a small room. He took a couple of baskets from under the peaches and tied them to the opposite edges of the balcony that went over the entire sports hall.

After that, Naismith divided the group into two teams of nine and offered them a competition, which consisted in throwing balls into the basket of opponents. Thus, James Naismith not only found an interesting occupation for his students, but also entered his name in the history of world sports. The first basketball match took place on December 21, 1891.
