Antarctic petrel
The Antarctic petrel is one of their birds living in Antarctica and on adjacent islands. Huge in size, with a wingspan of up to 120 cm. It can easily soar for a long time in the air, almost without flapping its wings. And on the water he feels great.
An excellent swimmer capable of diving to great depths, he spends almost all the time in the sea, and only during the breeding season.
Like all petrels, he displays chicks in the same place where he was born. Despite the fact that during the year he flies for hundreds and thousands of kilometers from this place, once a year he always returns there and finds his pair.
In the photo you can see the petrels in flight, on water, under water, on the shore, with chicks, and others, as well as descriptions to them will help you learn a lot about this proud bird sung by Maxim Gorky.
What is the reason for the unusual behavior of petrels in the harbinger of a storm at sea? In the old days, seafarers attributed this to the fact that these birds are the souls of dead sailors, and they warn of an impending storm, giving ships the opportunity to escape.
However, the explanation is quite simple. Before the storm, the sea begins the excitement, raising all living creatures to the surface: sea crustaceans, squids, crabs and other inhabitants of the sea, serving as excellent food for petrels. But when a strong storm begins, the petrels rise high into the sky, where they are waiting for the storm.
