Bloody waterfall
The bloody waterfall of the Taylor Glacier in the Valleys of McMurdo in East Antarctica, which fascinated literally everyone – nothing more than a flow of water in a blood-red color, was discovered not so long ago.
In itself, the presence of a waterfall in Antarctica is amazing, because at these temperatures the water freezes, and here the real miracle is the constantly running water that does not crystallize.
In addition, this waterfall makes it a unique bloody color, which appeared as a result of an excessive amount of iron sides.
Antarctica does not favor guests, but still there are brave adventurers who are not afraid of either eternal glaciers, endless snowy deserts, or the lowest possible temperatures. It is for such travelers that Antarctica has prepared a lot of surprises, including a bloody waterfall.
Agree, we are accustomed to transparent, dairy, turquoise, green, brown ponds. But the red waterfall is already exotic, clearly catching the eye.
The source of the Bloody Waterfall hides under a half-kilometer thick layer of ice. The stream of water flows from the Taylor Glacier, located in the Dry Valleys – East Antarctica.
When you look at the Antarctic waterfall, it seems that blood is flowing from the thickness of the ice. This is both an exciting and creepy sight.
If we talk about the history of the unique waterfall, it was discovered by Australian geologist Griffith Taylor. This happened in 1911. At first, scientists explained the unusual color by the presence of red algae at the source.
Later, the theory changed, it turned out that the red color is due to iron oxide, which is a consequence of the vital activity of the oldest microorganisms that have been living without oxygen for millions of years, in total darkness, at an incredibly low temperature. So, these microorganisms are evidence that life on Earth will continue, regardless of any changes, the only question is who will live?
The color is understandable, but why is there liquid water in Antarctica? The reason for this is that a large amount of salt is present in the composition of the water, therefore the Blood Falls never freezes.
