Wolverine – Description and lifestyle
Wolverine – belongs to the family of marten. This large predatory wild animal with its appearance is more like a bear or badger. It lives in the northern part of Eurasia and the upper half of North America. Alpine meadows, and the territory covered by forests, and the tundra are also suitable for Wolverine.
The animal is very well adapted to a cold and harsh climate, even 50 degrees of frost does not scare him. In the wild, he prefers to be away from humans.
Wolverine is a wild animal and a dangerous predator, in cases of external irritation it becomes aggressive and makes sounds similar to grunting, growling, yapping.
The weight of the animal ranges from 9 to 30 kg. The hind legs are longer than the front, so the body is curved upward. The tail is short but fluffy. Its huge paws help wolverine move in its habitat. The beast also walks like a bear – club-footed and has long hooked claws. The jaw is powerful with sharp teeth. Poor vision is compensated by excellent hearing and sense of smell. The animal is densely covered with long and coarse black and brown fur with a golden stripe that runs throughout the body.
In his life, Wolverine almost all the time is engaged in the protection of his territory – up to 1500-2000 km from other members of his gender. And only for several weeks the male and female converge to create offspring.
With its ridiculous shape and short legs, the wolverine develops a small speed, but because of its stamina, it pushes the victim, and she, exhausted, finds herself in a hopeless situation. It is not difficult for Wolverine to recapture prey from wolves and lynxes, it even happened that wolves became victims of large individuals of Wolverines.
There are no enemies in its habitat for adult Wolverines. They can repel a predator that is 5 times superior to himself. Wolverine does not attack humans, unless you drive it into a corner. In this case, the self-preservation instinct is triggered, and the predator becomes very dangerous.
Wolverines feed mainly on what they find in traps set by hunters. They are absolutely unpretentious in food. They can eat both prey from the trap and scraps left over from the wolf. He does not shun dead animals. If a well-fed beast finds food, then he hides it in a dug hole. It is not difficult for him to make such a crypt, in this he is helped by large claws on his paws. After which he carefully digs the hole and rams it, marking it.
When it becomes quite tight with food, the wolverine can get into the hunter’s house and enjoy its supplies, including canned food. There are practically no enemies in the habitat of the wolverine. In some cases, she is not afraid of either a wolf or a bear.
Wolverines manage to survive in harsh conditions and multiply rapidly. In the past, Wolverines were killed in large numbers because of their beautiful fur, which was used to make jackets. Wolverines are currently protected.
