In 1848, the first Russian hippodrome was opened here. Its regulars were all local nobles. Of the ten twin cities of Penza, six are in other countries. Penza National School, which opened its doors to students in 1786, is one of the oldest educational institutions in our country. Penza has a unique museum named after Myasnikov. He is notable for the fact that his entire exposition is one picture. Empress Catherine the Great personally approved the draft Penza coat of arms presented to her.
The history of this city began with a fortress, which was built here by order of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. The city subsequently grew around it. The name Penza received in honor of the river of the same name, on the banks of which it stands. This is a common practice – for example, the city of Kirov, under the name of Vyatka, was named after the Vyatka River. The temperature difference in winter and summer here can reach eighty degrees. However, this happens extremely rarely. In 1792, the first theater was launched in Penza. Penza is not in vain called a green city.
