Banana Scientific Name: The Botanical Name of the Banana “Tree”
Bananas are a popular fruit with yellow skin. The scientific name of the banana is Musa. They originated in South-East Asia and are now growing in many tropical countries. In Central and South America, bananas are grown for export to temperate countries. The banana “tree” also provides leaves and fibers, that are useful for making roofing, mats, and baskets.
The banana “tree” usually grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet. It is not actually a tree, as its trunk is made up of leaf stalks that grow close to each other. And as you know, the trunk of a tree is made of wood. The botanical name of the banana “tree” is the same – Musa.
The bananas grow in large, cone-shaped bunches hanging below the large leaves. There may be one hundred or even more bananas in each bunch, but only one bunch on each trunk. The fruit is usually picked while still green and left to ripen during the journey to markets in other countries. If they are still unripe when they arrive, the bananas may be ripened artificially.
Bananas consist of about three-quarters water and almost one-quarter sugar and starch, with a little fat and protein. They are usually eaten raw but can be fried or baked and served with cream.
