Interesting facts about the Golden Ring of Russia
The Golden Ring of Russia is the most popular tourist route, covering many ancient cities throughout the central part of the Russian Federation. All these cities are united by one thing – their value from the point of view of history and culture. Need I say that the Golden Ring is extremely popular with foreign tourists?
The “Golden Ring” refers to the tourist route through the cities of Russia, where unique historical monuments and architectural monuments have been preserved. Each of these ancient cities, located around Moscow, is “worth its weight in gold” – and this is how a resounding term, known to every Russian, appeared.
The first roundabout route through the ancient Russian cities was suggested by a Moscow journalist. He published a series of materials about his journey under the general name “Golden Ring”, and the name of the rubric quickly became a household name.
The Golden Ring traditionally includes eight cities. Other settlements with a rich history also claim to be included in the route.
“Zero kilometer” of this route was symbolically placed in Yaroslavl – on the Revolutionary street of the city even a corresponding memorial sign was installed. It resembles a lantern, which lists all the cities of the Golden Ring and the distance to them. The material for the sign was a cast-iron column of the late 19th century, found in Yaroslavl during excavations.
In the summer of 2017, the cities of the “Golden Ring” united in an alliance – the corresponding document was signed by the heads of eight main settlements of the route. The headquarters of the new organization is located in Yaroslavl. The first head of the union was the Yaroslavl Mayor.
At the end of November 2017, the Golden Ring as a tourist route celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Sergiev Posad secured a place in the “Golden Ring” thanks to the ensemble of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, which includes more than 50 buildings and structures. On the territory of the monastery you can see the ancient temples, icons of the work of Andrei Rublev, as well as worship the relics of the saints and visit the grave of Boris Godunov.
Pereslavl-Zalessky, located on the shores of the picturesque Lake Pleshcheyev, is famous throughout Russia thanks to its monasteries, temples, museums and earthen ramparts of the 12th century, which are preserved in an almost original form.
