Interesting facts about Uglich
Uglich is an amazingly beautiful city. In a relatively small area there are so many curious objects of antiquity that literally the eyes are scattered, and there are not enough days alone to examine them all. So if you are not indifferent to the historical heritage of Russia – Uglich is waiting for you.
The city was named Uglich, since near the place of its foundation the Volga bends at an angle. At least, this is the most popular hypothesis.
People lived on the site of modern Uglich almost continuously since the beginning of our era.
One of the most famous events in the history of Uglich was the murder of the eight-year-old son of Ivan the Terrible, who was cut throat in the courtyard of the local palace. The townspeople were so agitated by this crime that an uprising broke out in Uglich. Soon the rebellion was suppressed – about 200 residents of the city were executed. The Uglich bell was also punished, calling people to the square – it was whipped, cut off the “tongue” and “ear”, and then “exiled” to Tobolsk. Now the exiled bell was returned to Uglich.
In the middle of the 19th century, Uglich visited the French writer Alexander Dumas, who was looking for inspiration in the place of the murder of the little prince.
In 1921, in Uglich, there was a severe fire – Soviet newspapers wrote that the attackers set fire to the city center on three sides, and it burned out completely.
During the war in Uglich, an orphanage was established, where children from the besieged Leningrad were placed.
Uglich is one of the cities of the Golden Ring.
The builders of the Uglich hydropower plant destroyed an ancient monastery near the city – all the church buildings were destroyed, and then this area was flooded by the Volga.
In Uglich there is a museum dedicated to the ancient symbol of the city – the fire cock. A terrible bird allegedly appeared in the sky over Uglich before the murder of Tsarevich Dimitri, warning the townspeople about danger.
In Uglich, every year there is a winter entertainment festival, in which they organize swimmers “walruses”, matches in winter mini-football, horse-drawn sleigh rides and folk games.
In May in Uglich spend a whole decade of charity events and children’s holidays, the culmination of which is the day of the only defender of children in Russia, the holy Prince Dimitri.
One of the oldest photographic festivals in Russia is held in Uglich. Guests of this event were famous photographers from around the world.
In late August, residents of Uglich celebrate the Feast of a working horse, part of which is a horse show with a drawing foal.
In Uglich, the largest souvenir fair operates on the Volga.
Uglich carpenters helped Ivan the Terrible conquer Kazan – they built a wooden fortress, which was then rafted along the Volga and collected again near the capital of the Kazan Khanate. This fortress, later became the city of Sviyazhskoye, served as a cover for the troops of the Russian Tsar.
In Uglich, the childhood of his wife and faithful companion of Vladimir Lenin-Nadezhda Krupskaya-passed away.
In Uglich works the only scientific research institute of butter-cheese production in Russia.
During the war, the Germans repeatedly tried to bomb the Uglich hydropower plant, but could not find it – this strategic facility was so well disguised.
In Uglich, there is a private museum of myths and superstitions of the Russian people, where fairy-tale characters from Baba-Yaga to the brown-haired woman are waiting for visitors.
