Rubber Plant Scientific Name – Ficus elastica
The scientific name of the Rubber plant is Ficus elastica. This plant is part of the Ficus or Fig family. This plant is very durable and easy to care for and does come in several varieties which are mostly some color variations. It usually grows anywhere from 1 to 2 feet tall and has large rubbery, glossy, oval leaves which measure about 4 to 6 inches. Rubber tree plant care can be easy – just follow these simple guidelines.
The Rubber Plant does best in high temperatures but will tolerate the average temperature. You must still let the night temperature drop approximately 10F. This plant prefers high humidity. But also, will tolerate average humidity. You may mist early in the day to raise humidity.
As we already mentioned, the scientific name of the Rubber plant is Ficus elastica, but it is known as the Indian Rubber tree as well. This is the same plant.
Now let’s talk a little about the light. Although the Rubber Plant will tolerate low light, it prefers medium (bright indirect) light. Very dark spots will cause the Rubber Plant to become weak and spindly. On the other hand, if you see brown leaves, it is an indication that your plant is getting too much light. If you will use artificial light, make sure it gets about 16-17 hours per day.
Also, we should mention, that the botanical name is a formal scientific name conforming to the ICN for plants. The ICN stands for International Code of Nomenclature.
The soil of the Indian Rubber tree should be allowed to become fairly dry between waterings and it is very important. Over-watering will cause the leaves to droop and fall off and this leads to unpleasant consequences. Generally watering once a week should be sufficient but watch it carefully when you first get it to determine a good schedule.
Fertilize with a mild, diluted fertilizer every two weeks. Make sure you clean the large leaves at least once a month, it’s another important thing that we should mention.
