“You are a real peach” – the quote was originated from the tradition of giving a peach to a friend. This signifies the importance of peaches in our lives. This beautiful fruit is also treated as the symbol of immortality and long life. The scientific name of peach is Prunus persica.

Peaches originated in China 4,000 years ago. At that time, Chinese brides were referred to as peach since the Chinese considered the peach a female. Peaches then migrated west through Greek and Roman invaders. Subsequently, peaches were introduced in America with the Spanish explorers during the 16th century.

A peach tree can grow up to 5 meters in height. This member of the Rosaceae family is self-pollinative and has an impressive blossom. Peach fruit is round and juicy and is found in red, yellow, pink, white, or a combination of these colors. There is a distinctive vertical indentation on one side of the peach. Skin texture is fuzzy and dull.

Peaches are available in the market from June to September. While buying peaches, select the aromatic, slightly soft, or semi-firm red or yellow peaches that have smooth and velvety skin. Avoid peaches that are too hard since they will not ripen easily. Wash peaches just before consuming to retain the integrity of the fruit.

There is a variety of peach that calls Donut Peaches. The scientific name of this variety is Prunus persica var. platycarpa.

Take off the peel of the peach before eating. This fruit is not only eaten as fresh, it can be used in various forms such as sliced, poached, candied, dried, cooked, canned, or frozen. Peaches are delicious if added to yogurts, ice cream, fruit salads, or breakfast cereals. You can also prepare jam, jelly, pie, and soufflé using peach.
