What do bullfrogs eat ?

The bullfrog is one of the largest and most unusual frogs on our planet. In length, representatives of this species reach 15-25 centimeters, and the weight of the most “fat” adults can be as much as 600 grams! Not so long ago one photographer-naturalist was lucky to shoot such a frog at dinner, the main dish of which was a small mouse. In the picture published by the British The Daily Mail, we can see how a living mouse is peeking out of the mouth of a bullfrog, whose fate, however, is already predetermined.

According to 30-year-old Dan Garrick, a staff member of the Newguay Zoo in Cornwall, this huge predatory frog is too lazy and massive, so it usually just sits in place and waits for the victim to come to her feet. Then the “bull” either pounces on the prey, swallowing it, or grabs it with the right tongue and, pulling closer, pushes its paws straight into the mouth. By the way, in the mouth of this frog there are real teeth, and therefore their bites are rather painful.

If such a person grabs a person by a finger, then his sensations at that time will be comparable with dozens of glinting broken glass. Mice, which fell into the mouth of the “bull”, you can only sympathize. Meanwhile, she will not feel the teeth of the predator – the frog will swallow it whole and will digest until the next meal. But the life of the eaten animal will be cut off much earlier. “The mouse will die of suffocation or shock,” – said Garrick. It should be noted that the diet of a large African frog includes both mice and other small rodents, insects, birds and even other frogs.
