The small town of Sergiev Posad is not without reason so famous. At the same time, outside the historical center, Sergiev Posad is a completely ordinary city, quiet, clean, comfortable and beautiful.
The most famous place in the city is the Sergiev Posad Lavra, consisting of more than fifty buildings. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and it is also one of two laurels in Russia. The second, Nevskaya, is located in St. Petersburg. The historical name of Sergiev Posad is simply “Sergiev”. It got its modern name in 1991, and in Soviet times it was called Zagorsk at all. Sergiev Posad is part of the Golden Ring of Russia, the famous tourist route through historical cities. Moreover, among them he is the only city located in the Moscow region. Sergiev Posad was founded back in 1337, which makes it one of the most ancient Russian cities. An interesting attraction of Sergiev Posad is the local museum, which stores more than 30 thousand priceless exhibits.
Sergiev Posad is visited by more Chinese tourists than Russian. Moreover, about 300 thousand people come here every year, which is approximately three times the population of this city. On one of the local bells is a 72-ton bell, the largest of all existing bells in the Russian Federation. Tsar Ivan the Terrible was baptized precisely in Sergiev Posad. Some researchers agree that Russian dolls, traditional Russian toys, were once invented right here in Sergiev Posad. This city was visited not only by Russian monarchs who made a pilgrimage here, but also by many other famous people. Akhmatova, Gogol, Bunin, Lermontov and even the French writer Alexander Dumas came here. The area of Sergiev Posad is approximately 23 times the area of the Principality of Monaco. The Moscow Theological Academy, Russia’s largest educational center of the Russian Orthodox Church, is located right here in Sergiev Posad.
