Faced with the need to purchase a parrot, because as children were so inescapable, I realized that in our cities to buy some kind of pet that does not have much popularity is half the problem, the main problem is collecting information about it. The luxurious drum parakeet is a medium-sized parrot with rather large wings and a long tail. He is a beautiful flyer living in the coastal eucalyptus forests, parks and gardens of southeastern Australia. The total length of a parrot is about 40 cm, of which about 20 cm falls on the tail.
Their plumage is green. The head is bright yellow, and the throat is framed by a bright red stripe, which is shaped like a crescent. The beak is yellowish-pink. Paws are gray. Usually, males have plumage of full color by 8–12 months.
Females in plumage do not have red and yellow feathers, and its green plumage is less bright than males.
On the population, burgundy parrots are on the second place after wavy parrots. Barranda parrots usually stick in flocks, but sometimes in pairs. Often outside the breeding season, they congregate in large flocks. In September, during the beginning of breeding, the males gather in separate flocks, and after the breeding season is over, 2-3 pairs, and the young are grouped into family groups. Early in the mornings and afternoons go out for feeding, at this time they are absolutely not fearful, as they are busy with their work. At the watering place flock in small flocks. Often go down to the ground to peck grass seed. But most of the time prefers to spend on the branches of trees. Occasionally fly to other places, mainly depending on the weather. These parrots fly at a fairly high altitude. Often in flight they scream, their scream is similar to the cockatiel scream, but somewhat louder.
Australian parrots feed on various fruits, insects, grass seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables, flowers and berries. Quite often they make raids on grain fields.
When eucalyptus trees start to bloom, parrots enjoy pollen and nectar with pleasure. Nests are usually arranged high on trees in natural recesses. During tokovanija males behave very politely. They even feed females.
Young parrots almost do not differ from females, except that their plumage is somewhat brighter. Only males sing in this species of parrots. With that, they begin to sing very early, at the age of several months. Fully mature birds only become two years old.
Brumand parrots breed from September to December. Quite interesting is the overcurrent. During courtship, the male, held vertically, as if standing at attention. Raising feathers on his head, he nods his head, opens wings and tail, and begins to run back and forth in front of the female. His pupils narrow and expand.
Parrots nest as high as possible in hollows or hollow eucalyptus branches. Choose a place near the water. The nest is lined with small pieces of dust. The laying usually makes 4-6 eggs. Only female incubates eggs. At home, breeding boxes are quite suitable for breeding these birds.
In the house it is quite calm and even quiet parrot. He quickly gets used to people and to his aviary. Pretty hardy. It is better to keep at home several pairs, it is possible in adjacent enclosures, because they are used to living in a group. Baraband parrots are prone to eye infections and they often have foot problems, either from fear or from stress. They also regularly need to carry out prevention of worms.
Feeding is quite simple: a mixture of sunflower, wheat, oats, canary, millet. You can add weed seeds. I am happy to eat fruits and vegetables, especially carrots and apples. You can give dogrose. From green like dandelion and mokrichnik. During the feeding of chicks, it is desirable to give insects.
These cute parrots are very popular because of their amazing appearance and docile character. In addition, some of them are quite capable and can memorize words and even short phrases. But they get better at playing the melodies they hear. Special conditions for their maintenance in the house is not required, they are quite enough of a small aviary.
