Interesting facts about Bashkortostan

Bashkortostan is one of the most significant regions of the Russian Federation. The people living here have their own traditions, rooted deep into the history of these regions. We can say that this is a very interesting place – here the familiar Russian realities are mixed with the Bashkir color.

Bashkiria became the first national republic that arose in Russia and largely determined its current federal structure. Initially, autonomy was called Bashkurdistan, and the Soviet authorities officially recognized it in March 1919.

The first capital of the young republic was Orenburg. Then the republican center was moved to Sterlitamak, and from there to Ufa.

Ufa is one of the most spacious cities in Russia with a population of more than 1 million people. For every citizen in the capital of Bashkortostan there are about 682 sq.m.

Sterlitamak a few years ago was awarded the title of the cleanest and most comfortable city of the Russian Federation with less than a million inhabitants.

Bashkiria is the only region in the world where the ancient craft of beardedness has survived to this day. On the Bashkir territory is located the highest of the peaks of the Southern Urals – Mount Yamantau, towering at 1640 meters.

Not far from the Bashkir settlement of Lakly, an Aysky fountain, 5 meters high, is beating from under the ground. This fountain is artificial, although it looks like a real geyser – it originated in the 1960s, when geologists drilled a well for reconnaissance.
