Interesting facts about the city of Ivanovo

Ivanovo is a quiet, beautiful and interesting city. On narrow streets still there are old houses, a sidewalk tile laid in immemorial times, and other evidence of the Soviet era. In addition, the city has many green spaces, which makes it very cozy, especially in the summer.

There are several versions of why Ivanovo was entrusted with the title of “city of brides”. According to the first of them, the abundance of unmarried girls is explained by a number of garment factories located in Ivanovo. The second is attributed to a song performed in one of the films by Andrei Mironov – in it he declares that he will go to Ivanovo, the city of brides.

One of the most mysterious buildings in Ivanovo is a house built in the beginning of the last century by the Moscow businessman Dyuringer. The mansion brought only grief to the entrepreneur’s family: a year after the move, Duringer’s wife committed suicide, and soon he himself died of smallpox. Since then, the residents of Ivanovo never tire of whispering about the ghosts wandering around the house, and about the myriad treasures allegedly hidden in these walls.

Ivanovo was the first settlement in Russia during the first revolution, where a citywide council appeared.

Until 1932 the city was called Ivanovo-Voznesensky.

City park named after Nikita Khrushchev, who came to desolation, the townspeople are now called the “Goat Marsh”. However, the grove left from the park is still one of the popular vacation spots for Ivanovo.

On the site between the three university buildings in Ivanovo stands a three-meter “crystal slipper”, symbolizing urban brides. In winter, the metal frame is decorated with luminous garlands, and in summer – flowering plants.

The most popular element of the monument to Arkady Severov in Ivanovo is a dachshund from bronze – with it adults are massively photographed, and each child strives to stroke the dog and sit on her back.

In Ivanovo, many monuments of architecture were preserved – according to the number of unique buildings of the Soviet period, the city is second only to Moscow.

In 1925 in Ivanovo was built the first in the country factory-kitchen – a building of unique architecture, which was to eradicate the love of Soviet citizens for domestic food. In practice, the factory mainly supplied food to the factory canteens.

The oldest brick building in Ivanovo, which has survived to our days, is called the Shchudrovskaya tent. It is considered a unique architectural monument of the XVII century, which has no analogues in neighboring regions. The building was built for the village managers: in the first room visitors were received, in the second the clerk of local princes worked.

Ivanovo until 2010 was considered a historical settlement, but then the Ministry of Culture revised the status of the city.

Already almost 20 years in Ivanovo there passes the action “Flower of kindness” – in the spring on city streets elegant girls with roses which hand one flower to each passer-by. Then the “envoys of good” gather for a common photograph.

In summer, traditionally the action “Runaway Bride” is held in Ivanovo, during which young city dwellers march through the city in wedding dresses.

In the 1930s, Ivanovo was founded by Interdom, where children from foreign communists were trained. The students of this institution, among others, were the children of Mao Zedong.

In Ivanovo was born the Soviet actress Lyubov Sokolova, who became the most actively acted artist of the USSR. Sokolova performed over 200 roles on the movie screen – in particular, in the films “Quiet Flows the Don,” “Belorussky Railway Station” and “We Live to Monday.”
