Interesting facts about Cheboksary

The clean and cozy city of Cheboksary is very curious. Of course, the locals got used to it for a long time, but visitors usually immediately notice its charm, sometimes a little provincial, but therefore even more attractive. The capital of Chuvashia surprises with an abundance of greenery, a large number of smiles on the faces, passing pedestrians by drivers and some Chuvash culinary delights that will not leave indifferent even the sophisticated gourmets.

It is believed that this city was founded in 1469, as this year is mentioned in the oldest chronicles. However, archaeologists claim that the settlement at this place existed many centuries before.
On the territory of Cheboksary a lot of ravines. This is a consequence of the geological structure of this entire region.
Despite the relatively southern geographical location, the Cheboksary winter lasts an average of five months a year.
The highest and lowest temperatures ever recorded here were +38.6 and -44.3 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Cheboksary is a multinational city, but in numbers Chuvash (almost two thirds of the population) and Russians (almost a third) prevail.
The hero of the Civil War Vasily Chapaev was born in this city.

In the 19th century, this city was famous for its own “Leaning Tower of Pisa”. The bell tower of the local Ascension Church was tilted at a significant angle, which amazed everyone who saw it. Unfortunately, the bell tower has not survived to this day.
At one time, Lenin proposed to make the city of Simbirsk the capital of Chuvash, later renamed Ulyanovsk. However, this would violate the existing borders between the regions, so in the end Cheboksary was made the capital.
