He was the first of all the cities of Russia to receive the title of City of Military Glory. Previously, it was called “Belgorod”. Belgorod is located on the slopes of the White Mountain, which really has a white color, because it is composed mainly of Cretaceous rocks. For a long time Belgorod was part of the Pereyaslavl principality. It was founded in 1596 as a border fortress. But the settlement on this site was still many centuries before the official foundation.
In 2013, Belgorod took third place in the list of the most comfortable cities in Russia. At one time he entered the Kiev province, but then became the center of his own province, Belgorod. In 1918, during the Civil War, Belgorod was the temporary capital of Ukraine. During the Great Patriotic War, he was badly damaged, and was twice occupied by German troops. The ancient Belgorod Kremlin died in the middle of the 20th century due to active chalk development. The climate here is temperate. Near Belgorod Central Market there is a real sundial. The tallest building in Belgorod is a television tower – as much as 250 meters.
