Sunny Taganrog – the city is very cozy. Every summer, it attracts many tourists who come to relax on the Sea of Azov. But at another time of the year, it’s not bad here – the city is well-maintained, there is a lot of greenery, and everything necessary has been done for a comfortable life. Although, of course, the peak of activity in Taganrog always falls on the tourist season.
He bears the honorary title “City of Military Glory”. In 2015, a commemorative coin dedicated to Taganrog was issued. Taganrog was founded in the late 17th century by order of Peter I. It became the first Russian naval base, as well as the first port on the sea coast. The 500-ruble note depicts Arkhangelsk and the monument to Peter I. Actually, the Arkhangelsk monument is a small copy of the Taganrog original. It was Taganrog that became the first city in Russia built according to a ready-made plan. It received its name in honor of Cape Taganiy Rog. The city began to grow from there, and now there is its oldest part.
Despite its southern geographical location, it is sometimes cold here. Once in Taganrog, frosts hit -32 degrees. Two thousand years before the founding of Taganrog, an ancient Greek city was located almost on this site. Later, the ruins were flooded by the Sea of Azov. Under the terms of the Prut agreement concluded with Turkey after the war, Russia had to destroy the city. But it was later restored. There is a fully functional sundial. The aforementioned monument to Peter I was donated to Taganrog A.P. Chekhov. During the Great Patriotic War, the city was occupied by German troops for 680 days.
In 1947, the first in the USSR self-propelled combine harvester “Stalinets-4” was assembled in Taganrog. During the Civil War, in 1918, Taganrog for some time was the capital of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. Before the revolution, 17 foreign consulates were located in Taganrog. In 1699, the first Russian hard labor was opened here. There is a Pushkin embankment in Taganrog, although the famous poet was in this city only once, and spent only one day here. Taganrogskaya street is in five cities of Russia.
