Old Town Square, Prague

Prague – at the mention of this city there are associations with the romance of ancient places, the unique atmosphere of the Middle Ages, the amazing taste of Prague beer and, of course, a huge number of excursions – after all, the old and beloved city has something to boast to travelers from different countries.

The main attraction of Prague, which cannot be ignored, is the Old Town Square. This is the historic center of the old part of Prague. The square was formed as a place of intersection of trade routes that connected Prague cities. The main market was located on this square. Old Town Square is located on the right bank of the Vltava River. Geographically, the area occupies 15 thousand square meters.

Old Town Square for the history of Prague is a truly significant place. In various epochs, it served as a place of solemn and tragic events. The Old Town Square is a true symbol of fortitude and striving forward for the Czech people.

In 1442, Jan Zhilevsky, a prominent leader of the Hussite movement, poured his blood on his square during the execution. In 1458, King George of Podebrady was elected on the square. The year 1621 was marked for this place by the execution of 27 members of the anti-Habsburg uprising. Today this place can be seen from afar – it is marked by a cross and is located in front of the Town Hall.

The modern Old Town Square is a walking area that can be freely visited by anyone. The main part of the square is a pedestrian zone. In the center of the square is the so-called Prague Meridian. With the help of this structure in the Middle Ages, people determined the time. Not far from the meridian is a monument to the already mentioned Jan Hus. The monument was erected in 1915. The city building of the Town Hall was built in the 14th century. This building has retained its architectural style to this day. The astronomical clock is absolutely amazing on the Town Hall – they are also called the Prague Astronomical Clock. The Tyn Church, built in 1365 near the square, is also special. The fountain Krotsinova Kashna, which attracts with its unusual design, is remarkable for its amazing beauty and originality.

Surprising here is the architecture of the surrounding houses, which is preserved predominantly intact time and military actions. The architectural styles here are represented by a huge variety: Gothic, Renaissance, Rococo and Baroque.
